Workers are Pulling out Dead Pupae!?
- I saw last night through the window that some bees were carrying white, underdeveloped pupae around the hive, eventually getting them outside and dropping them off.
- This morning, I see a pile of similar and "casing" looking stuff below the entrance:
- At lunch, the pile was generally the same, but I did see one or two bees fly off with white pupae in their legs and one inside the hive carrying a piece around.
- There is no bad smell to these, and I see no mites on them either.
- The thinking was:
- Chalkbrood, but no mummified/dark larvae, and only affect larvae.
- AFB or EFB, but no smell and that attacks at the larvae stage not pupae as I understand it
- Very hygienic bees, some are bred to purposely kill and clean out cells where there are mites.
- Chilled brood. We've had a couple cold nights in a row and if they have expanded faster than they can cluster, the pupae on the periphery and get chilled and die.
- Max says to inspect, make sure there are eggs to verify a queen. Not sure I want to break the hive apart to do this. I will give it another day. Temperatures are supposed to get warmer.
- I did just look into the hive on Friday and saw nothing out of the ordinary. Saw the end of the brood nest with plenty of capped brood.
- I have to believe it is either hygienic bees or some got chilled since the stuff being dumped out is definitely pupae.
